When shooting videos in Phoenix, Arizona one does not simply go out in the middle of the day and start capturing content. There are a plethora of issues videographers are faced with on set, and even more-so when the set takes place in the desert. Here are a few tips to keep your video shoots going smooth even in the heat of summer.
#1 BRING WATER | I once brought a camelback pack on set thinking it was overkill, but at least I would not be dealing with dry mouth the entire day. This was one of the best surprises I've had working on set. If you're looking at a half day schedule or an indoor location, bring spare water bottles and a cooler. There will always be a thirsty person on set and bringing extra water makes a good impression.
#2 START EARLY | Guilt and shame can start to manifest when you bring a crew out to the desert to film and everyone is overheating. The coolest time of the day is just before sunrise. Even though it is a pain to wake up early, you will certainly thank yourself driving home before the sun gets too high. Not to mention, shooting early makes for some beautiful imagery that your clients will appreciate.
#3 DRESS APPROPRIATELY | I recommend dry-fit material for shirts and a hat to block out the sun. If you know you will be going off trail in the wilderness, make sure to bring high fitted socks and pants. I have left shoots itching my legs and picking stickers out of my socks long after we have wrapped.
